From fire to gourmet: 3 campfire recipes that everyone can do

Good food at the campfire? It’s a lot easier than you think. You don’t need expensive cookware or exotic ingredients. A fire, a cast iron pot and a stick – let’s get started.

1. Stick bread – the classic

Flour, water, salt, yeast – that’s all the dough needs. Knead briefly, wrap around a green (not resinous!) stick and hold over the embers. Not into the flame, but next to it. After about 10 minutes it will be golden brown. Tip: Refine the dough beforehand with herbs or garlic butter.

2. Dutch oven stew

Potatoes, carrots, onions, beef – dice everything and put it in the cast-iron pot. Pour in the broth, close the lid, put embers on and underneath. Simmer for two hours while you sit by the fire and enjoy the smell. Tastes like adventure.

3. Grilled chocolate banana

Slice the banana lengthwise, insert chocolate pieces into it, wrap tightly in aluminum foil. Place in the embers for 10 minutes. Spoon in – done. Sounds simple, tastes heavenly.

These three dishes have never disappointed. They are the reason why I prefer cooking on an open fire.
