What’s really in my camping box (and what isn’t)

After over 20 camping trips, I’ve radically reduced my equipment. The suitcase used to be full of unnecessary stuff: a second stove, three different knives, an XXL pan. Today I’m smarter.

My camping box weighs exactly 8 kilos and only contains what I really need: a sturdy camping stove, a cast iron pan (heavy but irreplaceable), a stainless steel cutlery set, a fire steel and a compact seat pad. Everything that needs USB stays at home.

These 3 things have benefited me the most

1. Cast iron skillet:It is heavy, distributes heat perfectly and lasts forever. Once seasoned, it is the best pan you can have on the fire.

2. Firesteel:No lighter, no gas – a firesteel works in wind, wet and cold. And it’s lighter than a replacement lighter.

3. Compact seat pad:It sounds banal, but after a wet butt on a cold meadow you’ll know why it’s worth its weight in gold.

Because camping doesn’t mean taking the whole house with you. It means getting by with little and having exactly what you need.
